G) With INDEFINITE PRONOUNS

Complete the sentences with an adjective clause:

H) Necessary, Unnecessary Adjective Clauses

 

The children, who wanted to play video games, went to room 5. All the children wanted to play videos. Thus, commas are used and the clause is unnecessary or non-defining.

The teacher who wanted to play video games went to room 5. Only the children who wanted to play video games went to room 5. For example, there 10 children and only 5 of them wanted to play video games. So, the clause here is necessary or defining.

Keep in mind that the pronoun THAT can NOT be used in unnecessary clauses. 

Also, object pronouns cannot be omitted when they are in unnecessary clauses (when commas are used).

 

I) Expressions of Quantity in Adjective Clauses

Combine the sentences:

1- I tried on 4 pairs of shoes. I liked one of them.

2- The city has around 2 million people. The majority of them are authors.

3- About a hundred people were taken to the hospital. 10 of them died.

Correct answers:

I tried pm 4 pairs of shoes, one of which I liked.

The city has around 2 million people, the majority of which are authors.

About a hundred people were taken to the hospital, ten of whom passed away.

 

KEEP IN MIND THAT comma is need, and the only pronouns you can use are which, whom, and whose!

J) Reducing Adjective Clauses to Adjective Phrases

Part one

Reduce the adjective clauses to phrases:

1- The scientists who are working on Covid-19 are making progress.

2- The rules that allow public access to parks need to be reconsidered. This virus is dangerous!

3- The psychologists who study the nature of corona virus have made a lot of progress.

4- David Cage, who is a great video game designer, helped Christian a lot. 

Part two

Change the phrases to clauses.

Parsa, the creator of Apple, talked to bill Gates.

Anyone wanting to join is welcome.

The ideas presented in this video are ridiculous.

 

Correct answers:
